8 Organizing Tips I Have Learned from my Mother

Aug 27, 2017 | Life Organization, Simply Organize, Time Management

What can I say about my mother… I could probably write a book about her, but today I would only like to share some of the best organizing and time-saving tips she has taught me, whilst growing up…

To be totally honest, I was a bit of a spoiled brat when I was younger (not that I am proud of that), but we can always learn and grow from past experiences. Here are what I have learned…

#1 – Write everything down

This can’t be truer if you want to stay super organized and on top of your game. It is as simple as, when you think of something important to do or to remember – WRITE IT DOWN. Carry a small notebook with you or use your phone, to make those essential notes and write down your thoughts. At the end of the day, evaluate your list and delegate, that which needs to be delegated. If it will take you 5 minutes or less, do it quickly. I am sure you get the point…

#2 – Keep all your valuable information in one place with easy access

At this very second, I can ask my mother for any personal document and she will be able to give it to me without hesitation. This is because all her information is securely stored in one place, with easy access. This is one of the most valuable things I have learned from my mother in regards to being organized, as the older you get the more information you accumulate and you usually need it at the most inconvenient times.

#3 – Have an ongoing shopping list.

I think I have mentioned somewhere before that a shopping list is quite important. My mom has a notepad on her fridge and every time she uses something in the kitchen and it is almost finished, she would write it down (also referring back to point 1). When she heads out the door, she grabs her shopping list, and voila, she is never in need. The benefit of this strategy is that you can reduce your shopping costs because you won’t buy unnecessary things at the grocery store.

#4 – Schedule time for yourself and just go for it.

We live in a world where everything is rushed and we hardly take time for ourselves. Take your diary right now, pick a day and block it off to do something that you enjoy. If it is reading a book or taking a hike – just do it. Make a point of it to do something for yourself on a weekly basis. It will change your life, I promise.

#5 – Being organized doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Ok, I will admit it – I love pretty notebooks and expensive-looking stationary, it makes organizing look so much prettier. The reality is that we don’t all have the money to spend on pretty diaries, apps, and stationary, so rather opt for the best one you can afford and make it work for you.

#6 – Do it now and it is done.

This is another piece of golden advice that must not go lost, ever. Never put something off until tomorrow if it can be done today, as simple as that. For example, if you have a few dishes in the sink – wash them now, because tomorrow there will be more and then the task starts looking impossible. Usually, then it also takes a lot longer to complete and who has time for that…

This is the one thing I struggle with the most, but alas I am working on improving my do it today attitude.

#7 – Never throw away scrap paper.

I have already written a post about that HERE.

#8 – Make enough food to freeze for later.

We all get those days where just don’t have the energy or time to cook a meal, so why not try making a few meals in advance and freezing them for a quick and easy meal solution? When my mom cooks, she cooks a big meal and freezes the leftovers for another time, and works like a bomb!!

Never leave the house without an umbrella.

 {I am just putting it out there – my mom always has an umbrella handy!}

Wow, it is actually amazing to realize how much my mother has taught me about organizing!! Thank you, MOM :)

Now I would like to know from you – what organizing tips or tricks have learned from your mother?

Share and Enjoy !
